Leadership

&

Policy

In this section, I expand on the boarding school's framework of actives that strive to advance students holistically through rigorous academics, athletics and arts. While leadership and policies regulate these for the shared goal of the best self and the common good, this may set a culture where students may see the benefits of sophisticated offerings but also their drawbacks

The Cultivation of A Busy Schedule

It is no secret that boarding schools like Loomis Chaffee boasts of their sophisticated course offerings, playing fields, state of the arts facilities that make the institution attractive to a global community. The leadership establishes careful policies for the functioning of a schedules, resources and personnel for the best offerings possible. Students, who submit themselves to a thorough admissions process express interest and desire to take part of a community whose expectations are to be submerged into a busy schedule. Whether student desires to take part in curricular and extracurricular actives for the love of such actives or for the accrual of actives that will distinguish a transcript, the leadership and policies are placed to support this culture. In the paper below, I expand on Annette Lareau's (2011) concept of concerted cultivism, a method of parenting that attempts to harvest cognitive, physical and social skills through the active participation of academics, athletics and art (p. 3). Loomis Chaffee subscribes to this model of fostering such skills. In essences, my experience has almost resemble one of parent who is living, teaching and coaching with adolescents who are away from home.

The polices established by the leadership aims a creating meaningful and inclusive experiences for students that not only enrich and advance student, but also simulate a college experience. What I expand on in the paper are the advantages and drawbacks of the demographics of our students through concerted cultivism. In an attempt on creating an inclusive and equitable community that is able to take advantage of the various offerings the school provides, the leadership ought to take into consideration the students which may be impacted by the overwhelming and demanding schedules and expectation of life at a boarding school. To create cultural shifts that celebrates the achievements of all, leaders and policies should be attentive to the needs of schools based on race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality for the celebration and advancement of all.
